This is not my car

I remember the day that my dad bought the car.  He had me drive him to the dealership.  I was so impressed.  The car was all picked out, all washed and ready to go.  My dad opened his wallet, pulled out the check, signed a few papers, handed the check to the dealer rep and off we went.  He in his brand new car and me in my old car.

Nope not this one

The day that my mom handed over the keys to my dad’s car, I did the Snoopy dance.  She was settling my dad’s estate.  I had really mixed emotions because I would rather have my dad still with me.  I had something that I could care for as his proxy and came with very fond memories of my dad.  I have fond memories of my dad caring for his car and us changing the oil together.  Memories of me driving the car on family road trips, and him fussing if I stayed at a Stop sign too long or if I scraped the tires while parallel parking.  Oh, and getting up way too early in the morning to move the car to the opposite side of the street on street cleaning days. My car is like a legacy application.  It meets all of my requirements except when it does not.  My car used to meet all of my requirements.  My car has bench seating in the front, an AM/FM radio, cassette player, large trunk and a security system. It’s my road dog.  I’ve put freon in hopes of reviving the air conditioning feature. I have not had air for a couple of years now.  The cost of having the air conditioning fixed at the auto shop is more than the blue book value of the car.  Now how and when did that happen?  The emotional return on investment on having the air conditioning fixed is greater than the dollar value. Yet, every time I roll down the windows and stick my head out the window to catch a hint of air on a muggy hot or rainy or hot and rainy day, I strongly consider driving straight to the auto shop and doing it any way. Is that what happens with legacy applications? We get an emotional attachment.  We know all of the features and functions and they serve us well until they don’t.  Then we execute some manual process, equal to rolling down the windows,  to make allowances.    or we look at the cost of repairs or replacement then prioritize the expense with all of the other things we need to do.  And then Fall happens.  Fixing the air falls on the priority list in favor of a new shovel and firewood and heat.   Then summer comes around and we wish we had that $$ we spent on heat for $$$ (air).

This....is MY car

This….is MY car

Saturday morning I was in REM sleep composing my blog entry for this week. During this REM cycle, I included a reminder to myself to write all of the blog that I was composing down as soon as I wake. Because…it was brilliant.

Then something happened.

I started to hear sounds that were not a part of my creative development process of the blog entry. There was gentle moving of stuff and tip toeing and more moving things. Well, I tried to ignore the sounds and go back to my sleep and my blog but my rapid eye movement gave me away. Then I heard it.

My husband said “Good Morning.  [slight pause] The car show is today”.

And just like that, BAAM! In that moment, I was officially awake and my blog entry was wiped clean from where ever dreams are stored.

It was also in that moment, I knew that greeting meant a whole lot more than what was said. It’s not what was said, it was how it was said. I could hear the happiness. It really meant….I have plans for us. The car show is today and I am looking forward going to the car show and taking pictures. So the sooner you get up and get your camera ready, we can run some errands and get on over to the car show before it gets way to hot.

While I was getting ready, I started to hear the Roar of enhanced engines in route to their display destination.  Or maybe that was my imagination.

With that, what could have been a regular ole hot scorching day turned into a great outing at the local car show talking to car enthusiast from the High Rollers Car Club, admiring the fabulous cars, and taking photographs.

Whispers

A few years ago, I created a Twitter account to start following the Internet happenings.  Twitter is great to keep up with the #hashtags happenings without having to reciprocate with bi-directional communication.   Yet, something is missing.  It’s like stepping up to the microphone and not singing a note.

I like to write and I write often.  I like to share.  I share time, things, good thoughts and good will.   It’s time to start sharing my writing.  But as a severe Introvert, sharing my writing is like sharing my energy.  It’s hard.   It does not fit in the confines of the #hashtag construct of being able to passively observe.  So, I created a Blog.  Now, I have to share my song.  Ski Trip 2013 - Patti

In doing this blog, I am lifting my head into the active online sharing and joining the blogging community.  I am releasing my thoughts on the linkage of life and technology.

Sharing Ant

There is a process to creating a Blog.  Creating the infrastructure for one’s online presence (The Technology) is the easy part…(Plan, research, fine tune requirements, alternatives analysis, decision, create site..) Boom!  A Blog is born.

The process of publishing is the hard part.  As I vacillated over the content, I was reminded that Good is the enemy of Great.  So here I am, sharing.  Denise Hill
